Are you someone who loves makeup, and wishes you could extend the life of it? You are not alone in the quest to achieve a flawless base that lasts hours on end. Even if you wear a basic CC cream everyday, would you be curious to know the secrets in how to keep your makeup looking fresh all day long? If so, you have come to the right place!
This means, start with a fresh canvas. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and follow through your normal skincare routine. If your skin is dry in the least bit, it is especially important to exfoliate to ensure your foundation/makeup looks as smooth as possible. Be sure to moisturize well following cleansing. Starting with a clean, smooth face is key.
This step is crucial in regards to keeping your makeup looking its best, lasting longer and staying shine free all day long. By knowing your own personal skin type, you can look for a trusty primer to use. When picking a primer, it is also important to know the ingredients in your foundation. Picking “like” ingredients is KEY in keeping your makeup on. Oil, and water, do not mix, so an oil based primer will not work well with a water based foundation. If your foundation contains any trace of silicone, then opt for a silicone based primer. Knowing how to apply your primer correctly also plays a huge roll in keeping your makeup looking fresh. Silicone based primers (example: Smashbox Photo Finish, or Benefits POREfessional primer) need to be pressed into the skin, versus rubbed, to prevent the product from balling up on the skin. When picking a primer, know your own skin type, and pick “like” products.
Following prepping the skin, applying your foundation and concealer, it’s time to set your makeup. After applying your base, your face may feel sticky to the touch, that is why you must set your face in order to prevent your makeup from melting, or becoming smeared. If you have never used a setting powder before, opt for a translucent one, which looks white, but is invisible on the skin when dusted on. The easiest way to set your face is by taking a big fluffy brush, swirling your brush in the product, and pressing onto the skin. Resist using any kind of sweeping motion to prevent “skid marks” to avoid taking product off the skin. Afterwards, for extra insurance on your makeup, use a makeup setting spray to achieve your desired finish. Setting sprays can come in a variety of finishes, from dewy, to matte. Setting Sprays are sprayed in either a T or X shaped motion, and can be used before and after makeup.
Caudalie Beauty Elixir is so much more than your basic makeup setting spray, it’s also an instant mood lifter. The Rosemary and Rose essential oils are what wake up and revive the skin. The mist also has an incredible skin brightening affect to it, so it’s great for on the go, or before your makeup as well as after. I love to use this right after I apply my moisturizer, for an added dose of hydration. Caudalie products are top notch in my book because they’re cruelty free, vegan, natural and hypoallergenic.
What’s not to love about this cult favorite? Being one of Sephora’s top sellers, who hasn’t tried this spray? This spray is perfect for any weather, regardless if it’s 100 degrees outside, this spray will keep your makeup on all night long…no pun intended. I use this spray on all my bridal + prom clients, after I apply setting powder, and it never fails. This All Nighter Spray can be used for all skin types, no matter what the weather.
Smashbox knows how to create an incredible primer, and is a leader among all makeup brands. If you’re someone who wants a hydrating primer without rubbing anything directly onto the skin, this should be your go-to. This product is not only a primer, it’s a setting spray, and a hydrating mist, that’s also infused with caffeine to wake up the skin. I love using this before my makeup as well as when I first wake up to tighten my pores (thanks caffeine)
Calling all oily gals, this stuff is INCREDIBLE, and is better gear towards someone with combo/oil skin, but can be used by all skin types. Boscia outdid themselves by creating a makeup setting spray, that also has major skincare benefits. I will warn you, this product NEEDS to be shaken well before spraying on skin, or else you may get white spots all over you, due to the white charcoal. Charcoal is a power house for absorbing oil, and tightening pores, so if you have oily to combination skin, do yourself a huge favor and pick up a sample at Sephora.
